Chiropractors specialize in adjusting joints in the body. There are three main chiropractic techniques used in our clinic. Diversified adjusting is the most commonly used technique. The chiropractor positions the patient so that the adjustment will be most comfortable and effective. She then delivers a short quick thrust over a particular joint to restore normal motion and function. Drop Table adjusting uses a special table with articulating pieces. A part of a table is raised 1-2 inches. The doctor then delivers a quick thrust over the joint which drops the raised part of the table back to an even plane. The equipment allows the adjustment to be lower impact to the patient. Impulse Instrument assisted adjusting uses an impulse adjuster machine to deliver a precise and targeted adjustment to a specific joint. Of the adjusting techniques, impulse adjusting is the most gentle.

Acupuncture is a medical technique that dates back thousands of years and is the most common modality used in traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin, painless needles into specific points of the body. This process stimulates the body’s energetic meridians, enabling the body to come back into balance and heal. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for a wide variety of medical problems including pain and injuries, anxiety, and smoking cessation.

Moxibustion, or moxa, involves the burning of the herb mugwort. The practitioner lights the mugwart bundle and holds it over the patient’s injury creating warmth for the area. Moxa is often used in conjunction with other traditional Chinese medicine therapies and has been shown to aid in the treatment of a long list of conditions including arthritis pain, healing from cold/ flu, and gastrointestinal distress.

The process of cupping involves a special glass cup which is used to create a partial vacuum. Depending on the condition being treated, the cup is either left in one place or moved around the back. Like many of the modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping improves many conditions. Cupping mobilizes blood to speed up recovery time after musculoskeletal injuries and may be used to reduce scar tissue and muscle tightness, and to treat various lung issues like pneumonia and asthma.

Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

Naturopathic doctors follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:

Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;
Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
Naturopathic doctors educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. Naturopaths treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Naturopaths emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Naturopathic practice includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy), public health measures, hygiene, counseling, minor surgery, homeopathy, prescription medication, intravenous and injection therapy, and naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth).

Dr. Nikki brings a unique combination of evidence-based and intuitive healing techniques that caters to each of my patients individually. They don’t have a “one-size-fits-all” mentality to healing. In treatment you work as a team, not only focusing on pain, but improving function and overall wellbeing- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Their goal is to provide excellent therapy and to educate and empower each patient by providing the tools necessary to be actively involved in the healing process and prevent further and future injuries. Every person has the power to become more deeply connected and aware of their body and how it is affected by physical, mental and emotional stress.

Being injured, experiencing pain or losing function can be as emotionally taxing as it is physically. Along with physical medicine including chiropractic adjustments/mobilization of joints, soft tissue techniques (involving muscles, tendons and ligaments) and therapeutic/rehabilitation exercise, Dr. Nikki commonly utilizes mindfulness and awareness exercises to help patients reduce the emotional influences they experience.

Dr. Daskal has many passions. They are a healer, teacher, learner and adventurer at their very core! They teach dance classes at a local studio. Dr. Daskal spends their free time dancing, cooking, creating art and adventuring in the beautiful PNW with their dog, BIV.

(she/her) Dr. Suzi Levy was inspired to co-found Asha in2010 by her belief that every body can be healthy and free from pain. She specializes in working with patients whose identities and experience may make it harder to access competent, empathetic care. Her experiences as a fat queer woman, bodyworker, and former athlete give her a level of empathy that helps patients trust her, because she listens to and believes what they know about their own bodies. She loves working with all kinds of bodies, goals, strengths, and challenges. She gets just as excited about helping a patient to comfortably walk a block as about getting an elite athlete back to their sport. Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Levy spent her 20s moving around the country, then moved to Portland in 2001. She lives in a big old four-square house with a wonderful community of housemates and dogs. She enjoys house projects, being with her community, and playing the guitar.

Educational Background After graduating from Rutgers in 1995 with a B.S. in economics, Dr. Suzi Levy began her career in bodywork in 1997 as a graduate of the Florida College of Natural Health in Massage Therapy. She worked in sports medicine for a professional soccer team and the U.S. Swim Team. Her interest in preventive care and wellness led her to study chiropractic, and in 2006, she graduated from Western States Chiropractic College.

Genevieve Moore was born and raised in Portland, OR. As child they grew up being incredibly physically active. Gen enjoyed any form of play that involved movement. They were competitive in soccer, softball, and basketball. When at home Genevieve strapped skates on their feet and skated around the concert floor of their basement. Later they fell in love with dance. While studying dance at the University of Washington Genevieve found a class that opened their eyes to their future, the anatomy of movement.

In 2007, Gen began studying Chinese Medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. When they started, the medicine seemed like magic. As they progressed through the program, Genevieve saw the connections between western medicine and eastern. The classes they most enjoyed were those surrounding anatomy and movement. After graduation Genevieve continued working at the college as a Teaching Assistant so they could further their knowledge of structural diagnosis and anatomy.

Genevieve’s practice in Oregon is built around sports medicine. To deepen their understanding of structural assessment they gained my Personal Training Certification from the National Association of Sports Medicine. Genevieve love applying their knowledge of strength training and functional anatomy with healing of Chinese Medicine.

Although Genevieve’s area of expertise is in pain management, injury recovery, and athletic training they don’t limit their practice to just that. Chinese medicine gives Gen the tools to help just about any patient. From the common cold to fertility this medicine can have a positive impact.
