Acupuncture is a medical technique that dates back thousands of years and is the most common modality used in traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin, painless needles into specific points of the body. This process stimulates the body’s energetic meridians, enabling the body to come back into balance and heal. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for a wide variety of medical problems including pain and injuries, anxiety, and smoking cessation.

Moxibustion, or moxa, involves the burning of the herb mugwort. The practitioner lights the mugwart bundle and holds it over the patient’s injury creating warmth for the area. Moxa is often used in conjunction with other traditional Chinese medicine therapies and has been shown to aid in the treatment of a long list of conditions including arthritis pain, healing from cold/ flu, and gastrointestinal distress.

The process of cupping involves a special glass cup which is used to create a partial vacuum. Depending on the condition being treated, the cup is either left in one place or moved around the back. Like many of the modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping improves many conditions. Cupping mobilizes blood to speed up recovery time after musculoskeletal injuries and may be used to reduce scar tissue and muscle tightness, and to treat various lung issues like pneumonia and asthma.

Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

Naturopathic doctors follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:

Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;
Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
Naturopathic doctors educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. Naturopaths treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Naturopaths emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Naturopathic practice includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy), public health measures, hygiene, counseling, minor surgery, homeopathy, prescription medication, intravenous and injection therapy, and naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth).

Mandalyn’s journey into acupuncture is a testament to their determination. As a single mother and a full-time student with limited finances, they discovered a welcoming community acupuncture clinic that ignited their passion for the art of acupuncture. Mandalyn truly shines in the blend of acupuncture and bodywork. They draw on their skills in these modalities, along with yoga training, to create sessions tailored to each client’s specific needs. From addressing orthopedic pain to nurturing mental health, Mandalyn employs a blend of East Asian techniques to accommodate various health patterns and patient preferences.

Mandalyn is dedicated to creating a secure and empathetic environment for their patients. They place special emphasis on ensuring their patients feel safe, respected, and informed. This includes practicing clear communication, obtaining informed consent, using correct pronouns and affirmed names, and taking the time to explain treatment processes thoroughly.

In Mandalyn’s own words, “My goal is to hold space for people, like a lamppost in the dark spaces of life we must navigate. Where people choose to go with the light shed on the path is their decision; I am not here to judge, only to support.”

Mandalyn’s toolkit extends beyond acupuncture and includes several other techniques:

Shiatsu: A Japanese massage modality that incorporates abdominal massage and specific channel pressure along qi meridians.

Tuina: A Chinese massage style that engages qi channels and includes assisted stretches.

Cupping: The use of suction cups to relieve tension and enhance circulation.

Gua Sha: A technique that involves a gentle scraping of the skin with a smooth-edged tool to promote circulation and release stagnation.

(she/her) Dr. Suzi Levy was inspired to co-found Asha in2010 by her belief that every body can be healthy and free from pain. She specializes in working with patients whose identities and experience may make it harder to access competent, empathetic care. Her experiences as a fat queer woman, bodyworker, and former athlete give her a level of empathy that helps patients trust her, because she listens to and believes what they know about their own bodies. She loves working with all kinds of bodies, goals, strengths, and challenges. She gets just as excited about helping a patient to comfortably walk a block as about getting an elite athlete back to their sport. Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Levy spent her 20s moving around the country, then moved to Portland in 2001. She lives in a big old four-square house with a wonderful community of housemates and dogs. She enjoys house projects, being with her community, and playing the guitar.

Educational Background After graduating from Rutgers in 1995 with a B.S. in economics, Dr. Suzi Levy began her career in bodywork in 1997 as a graduate of the Florida College of Natural Health in Massage Therapy. She worked in sports medicine for a professional soccer team and the U.S. Swim Team. Her interest in preventive care and wellness led her to study chiropractic, and in 2006, she graduated from Western States Chiropractic College.
